Day 1 — Valparaíso (Santiago), Chile
Embark Silver Explorer and depart on your exciting 12-day Silversea Expedition — “Patagonia & Chilean Fjords”. This evening, you will be introduced to your Expedition Team and enjoy the first of many delightful diners in The Restaurant.

Day 2 — At Sea
A leisurely day at sea is yours to enjoy. Meet some of your fellow explorers as you discover the luxurious amenities aboard Silver Explorer. Attend informative lectures and attend a Zodiac briefing led by your Expedition Team members that will prepare you for the upcoming ports-of-call and the many adventures that lie ahead. In the comfort of your suite, relax and watch a movie on the in-suite interactive television.

Day 3 — Niebla, Chile
Niebla is a small village on the banks of the Rio Valdivia where Chile’s Corral Bay meets the Pacific Ocean. Today Niebla is a beach resort, but in 1671 was a defensive fortress built by Spanish conquerors to prevent attacks from pirates and corsairs.

Today we will drive to the charming river port city of Valdivia, where we’ll find an interesting blend of influences from the native Mapuche, Spanish settlers, and German immigrants. Our destination is the Historical and Anthropological Museum Maurice Van der Maele that houses a collection of Mapuche artefacts and jewellery, as well as important pieces from Hispanic and German periods. As the first colonists, Germans diligently worked to develop the area and their influence can be felt in every corner of this city. The first colonists arrived here in 1849 and worked hard to develop Valdivia into one of one of southern Chile’s most productive areas.

Day 4 — Puerto Montt, Chile
The one-time German colony of Puerto Montt is our gateway to Chile’s Lake Region — a spectacular area with dozens of active volcanoes and picturesque lakes that number in the hundreds. Our tour takes us along the southern shores of Llanquihue Lake, dominated by the impressive snow-capped Osorno volcano, and through Ensenada, located at Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. At Lake Todos los Santos, also known as Emerald Lake, we will board a catamaran for a 45-minute navigation of the lake’s clear green waters.

We next visit a series of waterfalls, formed centuries ago by the descent of the Petrohue River through the volcanic rock. Our drive continues on to the majestic Osorno volcano, which reaches 2,652 metres above sea level. We will reach the area called “La Burbuja” (The Bubble), located at approximately 1,200 metres above sea level. This is the starting point for those who come to ski and for those who dare climb the volcano. We will have time to walk around admiring the magnificent view over the whole Petrohue Valley or to enjoy a coffee in the cafeteria. Today’s excursion concludes in the Ensenada area with a delicious lunch before returning to the Silver Explorer in the late afternoon.

Day 5 — Castro, Chiloé Island, Chile
Chiloé Island is home to an amazing collection of 150 Jesuit-carved wooden churches, houses raised up on poles out of the water, and more than 400 native plant varieties. We drop anchor and go ashore via the Zodiacs. From Castro, we head south to the picturesque village of Dalcahue. On the way, glimpse the colourful hamlet of Llaullao with houses roofed with tejuelas.

After a brief ferry ride to Quinchao, we pass through Curaco de Velez. This is tiny village of approximately 500 inhabitants had its best times around 1850 when cattle raisers and whalers lived here. Today, beautiful houses remain as a testament to these better times. Another highlight of this village is the coastal avenue where it is sometimes possible to see black-necked swans. Just ahead, we arrive in Achao, which was founded by the Jesuits in 1743 and now has almost 2,500 inhabitants. Achao is a lively town with boats arriving every day from all the surrounding islands. While here, we will visit the Jesuit’s Achao Church, the oldest wooden structure in Chiloé and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Constructed in 1730, it contains beautiful baroque imagery. Afterwards, we cross Achao’s main square to enjoy a snack and typical local music before returning to Dalcahue. Here we will visit the well-preserved Dalcahue Church with its galvanized iron roof. Carved by Jesuits from locally grown Patagonian cypress, larch and luma trees, the detailing and precision are amazing. It was founded in 1849, and declared a World Heritage site in 2000.

Alternatively, visit Chiloé National Park, located on the western coast of Chiloé Island. It encompasses an area of 430.57 km² and includes dunes, temperate rainforests, swamps, and peat bogs. The park’s warm and humid climate contributes to the existence of the evergreen forest, which is made up mostly of terebinth shrubs, coigüe, luma, myrtle, tepu and larch. The fauna includes fox, sea lion, mountain monkey, sea otter, opossum, pudú, finch, and patagonian woodpecker. Some of these species are endemic, due to the insular nature of this island. Our walk takes us along the El Tepual Trail through evergreen tepú forest.

Day 6 — At Sea
Binoculars and camera in hand, head out on deck to watch for seabirds and marine mammals. Attend informative lectures that will prepare you for the upcoming ports-of-call and the adventures that lie ahead. Other onboard diversions include spa treatments, a workout in the Fitness Centre, and, of course, exquisite dining experiences.

Day 7 — English Narrows
                Pio XI Glacier, Chile

Early this morning, be out on deck to watch as we head towards the English Narrows. Our Captain and local Chilean Pilots expertly manoeuvres Silver Explorer through the slalom course of islands and channel markers. During this time, we may spot Magellanic diving petrels and steamer ducks, and if we are very lucky, we may spot the endemic Chilean dolphin. Shy of ships, this small dolphin enjoys spending its time in narrow channels with heavy tidal rips.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Pio XI Glacier. This tidewater glacier sprawled out in front of us is 4.5 km wide and a remarkable shade of brilliant blue. An outlet glacier of the South Patagonian Ice Field, the Pio XI had once extended out into the fjords whose waters we ply today. Conditions permitting, we will climb into our Zodiacs and dodge brash ice and bergy bits as we approach the glacier at a safe distance. Alert for signs of calving, we may see small chunks of ice falling from the glacier front.

Days 8–9 — Puerto Natales, Chile
Nestled on a gently sloping point amidst astonishing scenery, the bustling port town of Puerto Natales overlooks the Ultima Esperanza (Last Hope) Gulf and has an engaging view of the Monte Balmaceda.

The most attractive features are found in the rugged nature, where indigenous fauna and flora exist in often harsh and unpredictable weather conditions. In this vast arid region of Patagonia and within the confines of Torres del Paine National Park, we find breeding populations of 15 bird of prey species including the Andean condor, Black-chested buzzard-eagle, Rufous-tailed hawk, Cinereous harrier, Chimango caracara, Magellanic horned owl, and the Austral pygmy-owl, amongst others. It is a veritable birder’s paradise.

Our friendly and knowledgeable ship staff and expert local guides guide us through the park. Following, we sample some local cuisine. Local empanadas especially nice when paired with a glass of Chilean wine. As evening descends, we return to the Silver Explorer and cruise through the spectacular scenery of the Kirke Narrows or Santa María channel (depending on the tides) and their respective Kirke and White passes.

Days 10 — At Sea
Early this morning we will depart Puerto Natales in time for the right tide to pass through some of the narrowest channels in the Chilean Fjords. Participate in onboard activities, relax in one of the lounges, or peruse an array of titles and topics in the well-stocked Library. Tonight, before turning in, take a stroll on deck and enjoy the solitude and splendour of the vast sea and sky.

Day 11 — Punta Arenas, Chile
Depart from the pier for an exploration of the city of Punta Arenas, stopping at the observation point of La Cruz Hill for a wide view of the city and the Strait of Magellan. Continue on to the Mayorino Borgatello Museum, founded by the Salesian missionaries, where you can view exhibits illustrating the habitat and history of Patagonia’s aboriginal people, and the region’s natural history.

Continue south alongside the famous Strait of Magellan to reach El Galpón Farm. Upon arrival, you will be hosted by the owners and will be invited to appreciate a brief but complete video showing the important relationship between cattle and pioneers of the age in the region. Next, you will be lead toward El Galpón passing by a guided path of local flora. Upon arrival to el Galpón, appreciate a nice demonstration of sheep shearing activity and learn about the procedure of the wool. Also you may see rheas, cows, horses and llamas at the place.

Before returning to the ship, visit the exhibition room, browse some local products and souvenirs and enjoy a refreshment.

Day 12 — Garibaldi Fjord and Glacier
This afternoon, Silver Explorer will enter the Garibaldi Fjord, a narrow passage strewn with floating ice in shades of blue and green. Ribbons of waterfalls snake down the steep mountainsides. At the head of this picturesque fjord, take in the quiet splendour of the retreating Garibaldi Glacier.

Day 13 — Ushuaia, Argentina
Silver Explorer will arrive at Ushuaia in the morning. Following breakfast, disembark Silver Explorer and transfer to the airport for your charter flight to Buenos Aires.

Expedition highlights and wildlife listed here are possible experiences only and cannot be guaranteed. Your Expedition Leader and Captain will work together to ensure opportunities for adventure and exploration are the best possible, taking into account the prevailing weather and wildlife activity. Expedition Team members scheduled for this voyage are subject to change or cancellation.
